The style of karate taught by Hidden Dragon Karate-Do is Traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu founded by Chojun Miyagi (1886-1953). Goju means "hard soft" style and reflects Miyagi's fusion of Shaolin, Pa Kua and Naha-Te to develop his new martial arts style. HDKD aims to deliver a syllabus which stays true to the origins of Miyagi's system. The syllabus consists of basic goju elements: strikes, blocks, stances, kicks. Students are taught basics in isolation to perfect each technique and their knowledge of these techniques is then broadened by utilising them in combinations, kumite (sparring) and kata (prescribed movement sequence, creative form). Development of kata is achieved by in-depth bunkai, which aims to promote an understanding of every element within each kata and to bridge understanding between kata performed and its self defence application.
